HW News
It is 2017, and HealingWoman, begun in 2010, has grown. This year I will update the website to reflect the real-world activities I do, as well as make the blog library easier to navigate, making clear what is literary essay, what relates to health advocacy and medical articles for consumers, and what represents news or real-world activity.
I also invite others who would like to be heard to submit pieces as a guest author. There is no charge and copyright remains yours.
Can I help you? Let me know.

Essay. Blind and Deaf.
My son Joseph is blind. Not literally; he is mildly farsighted and does not even need glasses. I mean he doesn’t see skin color. To him, different skin colors are like different hair colors, choices in clothes, or use of … Continue reading
Essay. The roads we take (revised January 2012)
Sometimes I write an essay and the impulse that led to it is finished. Other essays have been revised several times over the years. Many of these have their origins in death and reflections on the person who died. Joe … Continue reading
Essay. Beauty and the Beast.
In our little world of new movies and re-released films, this weekend held a big event: a viewing of the new, 3-D version of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. The movie, the only animated film to date nominated for a Best … Continue reading

Personal health log. Riding out the Storm VII
We are two weeks out from the day everything fell apart and I ended up in the psychiatric emergency room in Boston. Some days I feel I’m looking at a film of life rather than being immersed in it, physically … Continue reading

Essay. Friday the thirteenth
I grew up believing that any Friday that fell on the thirteenth day of a month was unlucky: Adults did not explain why this was so, it just was. Now I am middle-aged and still half convinced Friday the thirteenth … Continue reading

Personal health log. Riding out the Storm V (first published December 9, 2011)
I started writing this post 6 weeks ago. Usually I write fluidly when ideas are ready to come together. In this case, I knew the ideas and the personal experience, but I was not ready to type into words what … Continue reading

Personal health log. Riding out the Storm IV (first published October 20, 2011)
A number of years ago, I was admitted to a hospital for several days of EEG (brain wave) monitoring to see what types of seizures I was having, how often, and thus, what medication change or other treatment might help … Continue reading

Personal health log. Riding out the Storm III (originally published Oct. 16, 2011)
It has been over a month since I realized I am seriously depressed. I know that my mood fluctuates with what is left of my menstrual cycles and that depression is common for women entering or passing through menopause. That … Continue reading

Personal health log. Riding out the Storm II (first published Sept. 2011)
Yesterday was rainy, damp, and cool with a gray sky and no sign the sun existed. Even if I were not depressed, I would have wanted to stay in bed. However, I have two dogs who believe they have a … Continue reading
