HW News
It is 2017, and HealingWoman, begun in 2010, has grown. This year I will update the website to reflect the real-world activities I do, as well as make the blog library easier to navigate, making clear what is literary essay, what relates to health advocacy and medical articles for consumers, and what represents news or real-world activity.
I also invite others who would like to be heard to submit pieces as a guest author. There is no charge and copyright remains yours.
Can I help you? Let me know.

Mind: Talking about suicide so we decrease the number of people who die by suicide.
Suicide is not reversible. Stop before you do it….. I wanted to post on mental health in May but did not because I wanted current statistics: When I last researched mental health five or six years ago, the World Health … Continue reading
Essay. Finding gratitude when you don’t feel grateful.
This morning I paused at the foot of the stairs and looked for the mirror that hung there for 23 years. It wasn’t there, just a nail and a bare white wall. We have taught Joseph to come directly to … Continue reading

Essay. The Swans. When the ice was a mirror, and birds my only friends.
When Joseph was in an autism preschool, I drove him to and from home because it was only 10 minutes away. On good days, I loaded the dogs in the back and strapped Joseph into his car seat. I left … Continue reading
Essay. Scars.
If we have a minor cold, we are not inconvenienced much. When an illness or accident changes everything or someone dies, we truly need to heal. Healing body, mind, and spirit does not restore the past. It does something far … Continue reading

Thought for the Day. Find your Moments.
Spring arrived late for us after several months of snow on the ground deeper than I am tall, and I’m a woman of average height. But the seasons have changed, with colors to be seen outdoors in nature rather than … Continue reading

Essay. The World in a Single Flower.
It has been rainy and cool here for the last two days, so different from the period when two of three weeks had temperatures not far below body temperature, compounded by high humidity. The pain in my right hip and … Continue reading

Essay. The Fog of Life.
A caution of sorts. I live near Boston, Massachusetts, so much of my personal doings and thoughts for the past month have taken place against the backdrop of the bombings at the Boston Marathon. This week a policeman gave his … Continue reading

Family health log: Living with autism II.
We didn’t have any obvious signs that Joseph was anything other than a typical newborn. In hindsight, the period when he was comforted by being tightly bundled lasted longer than other parents were reporting, and not only the crib, but … Continue reading

Essay. The only thing to fear…
When I was a little girl, it seemed very easy to say “I’m afraid” and have an adult almost magically appear, hug me or stroke my hair, and say things would be all right. Things change as we grow older. … Continue reading
