HW News
It is 2017, and HealingWoman, begun in 2010, has grown. This year I will update the website to reflect the real-world activities I do, as well as make the blog library easier to navigate, making clear what is literary essay, what relates to health advocacy and medical articles for consumers, and what represents news or real-world activity.
I also invite others who would like to be heard to submit pieces as a guest author. There is no charge and copyright remains yours.
Can I help you? Let me know.

Mind: Talking about suicide so we decrease the number of people who die by suicide.
Suicide is not reversible. Stop before you do it….. I wanted to post on mental health in May but did not because I wanted current statistics: When I last researched mental health five or six years ago, the World Health … Continue reading
Patient Advocacy. Disability and Public Safety II. Communicating Effectively.
Communication relies on reception of another person’s language (to hear or lipread), ability to understand the content of what is said, and two additional steps. The person expected to reply must be able to form a reply mentally and then … Continue reading

Essay. The Table. A Child’s Memory Understood 50 years Later.
When I was little, I attended a supper served family style to people seated along three very long tables. I remember my mother and grandmother, but it must not have been for ladies only because the person I remember most … Continue reading

Patient Advocacy. Disability and Safety in Public I. When private information needs to be taken outside the family.
I never thought about disability until I was disabled at 25. For the first two years after my head injury, I was at home or with my husband. I didn’t think about the line between my privacy in public and … Continue reading

Personal Health Log. Riding out the Storm. Living with Depression 1 of 9
I am posting this series again as a response to the death of a much loved, well-known man, Robin Williams. He killed himself. While the spotlight is on depression, I want to add another person’s experience living with severe depression, … Continue reading
Essay. The Fog of Life.
A caution of sorts. I live near Boston, Massachusetts, so much of my personal doings and thoughts for the past month have taken place against the backdrop of the bombings at the Boston Marathon. This week a policeman gave his … Continue reading

Family health log: Living with autism II.
We didn’t have any obvious signs that Joseph was anything other than a typical newborn. In hindsight, the period when he was comforted by being tightly bundled lasted longer than other parents were reporting, and not only the crib, but … Continue reading

Essay. As my son turns 18…
When I was little, I thought of love as an almost magical force that bound people together. While I knew people, including me, were highly imperfect, love itself seemed to be beyond the usual human limitations. It was a gift … Continue reading
