HW News
It is 2017, and HealingWoman, begun in 2010, has grown. This year I will update the website to reflect the real-world activities I do, as well as make the blog library easier to navigate, making clear what is literary essay, what relates to health advocacy and medical articles for consumers, and what represents news or real-world activity.
I also invite others who would like to be heard to submit pieces as a guest author. There is no charge and copyright remains yours.
Can I help you? Let me know.

Essay: Perfect Imperfection.
I left a doctor’s appointment worried about diagnostic and treatment challenges and in increased pain from having to climb two flights of stairs and then walk down. On the sidewalk, I noticed the dogwood tree. I looked at several blossoms … Continue reading

Essay. The Time that is Given to Us.
When we wish we had someone else’s looks, talent, job, or wealth, we want it, but we don’t really want to trade lives. That would mean getting someone else’s health, family, and worries, as well as surrendering ours, all of … Continue reading

Family Health Log. Looking Back to Look Forward.
My father always told me you have to look backward, to see where you came from, before you can be ready to look forward and know where to go. This became clear to me in an entirely new way when … Continue reading

Essay. Lessons from Doomsday.
I wrote this essay in Fall 2010, shortly after the anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks in the United States. This morning, I felt compelled to go back to these words, to reflect with the experiences and insights of … Continue reading

Essay. The road I traveled.
I drove into the city today for a doctor’s appointment, and between heat-wave temperature, high humidity, and difficulty maneuvering the rollator (the 4-wheeled walker I use for longer distances), I struggled. On the way home, I missed my exit from … Continue reading
Essay. Dancing in the Dark.
When I was little, love was an almost magical force that bound people together. While I knew people, including me, were highly imperfect, love itself seemed to be beyond usual human limitations. It was a gift from God, and perfect … Continue reading

Essay. The New Leaf.
When my brothers and I were young, our grandmother would occasionally tell us we needed to turn over a new leaf. It was her way of saying we needed to stop doing whatever bad thing we were doing and find … Continue reading

Essay. Fate and Destiny.
A few days ago, a remarkable thought was spoken in an entirely unremarkable movie: If Fate is what happens to us, then our Destiny is found in how we respond to our Fate. I wanted to be a doctor from … Continue reading

Essay. Memorial Day… for all of us, in memory of all of them
This weekend is the Memorial Day weekend in the United States, with Monday the holiday itself. I remember childhood Memorial Days as days of wandering around the cemetery trying to find my grandfather’s grave or my great aunt’s: Although the … Continue reading
